City of Kingston 2010 Front Garden Competition

 
About the Competition

The competition is now in its seventh year and encompasses the entire City of Kingston. The competition is coordinated by the City of Kingston, Recreation and Leisure Services Department.

 
Rules for the 2010 Competition
  • Property must lie within the City of Kingston boundaries
  • Maximum of one category only per entrant – circle the category that you wish to enter
  • Garden must be visible from the street, hidden gardens don’t count
  • Judging will take place July 4th to July 10th. Schools will be judged prior to the end of the school year
  • You do not have to be home for judging
  • Finalists will be visited by our awards panel of judges who will make ALL final decisions
  • The judge's decision is final and correspondence will not be entered into
  • The City of Kingston reserves the right to use the names of nominees, plus photos and addresses of gardens
  • First, second and third prize will be awarded in each category. Prizes may be awarded in the form of gift cards/certificates
    • $100.00 First Place
    • $50.00 Second Place
    • $25.00 Third Place
  • An Awards night is hosted by the City of Kingston in August. The Committee appreciates the effort that goes into beautifying your property and participating in this great program, but due to the high volume of nominees, the City limits the number of invitees to the top 3 in each category
  • If you are one of the top 3 in a category, you will be sent an invitation to the Awards Night. Each person invited can bring one guest, and the cost for your one guest is $5.00, payable at the door. You must bring your invitation with you to Awards Night
  • No responsibility is accepted for late or misdirected entries
Judging Criteria
 
I.     Design (30)
  • Originality, creativity
  • Effectiveness of design elements
  • Harmony of design elements
  • Effective integration of plants and hardscape
  • Planting has design continuity
 
II.     Plant Material (30)
  • Quality of plant material
  • Use of design elements for plant synergy
  • Compatibility with the environment/architecture
  • Colour Harmony
  • Unique use of plant material
  • Proper installation techniques
  • Variety of plant species, mixture of colour, form and texture
 
II.     Maintenance (30)
  • Pruning and bed maintenance
  • Perennials or annual maintenance
  • Consistency with design objectives
  • Appearance suitable to garden style
  • Hardscape is maintained; fresh paint, not chipped or worn excessively(includes garden art)
 
II.     Visual Impact (10)
  • Planting has a unique or interesting feature used to its full impact
  • Planting is welcoming and has an overall positive feel
  • Planting has multi-seasonal interest
  • Garden has a positive impact on the neighbourhood
